Why Traditional SEO Isn’t Enough: Optimizing for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

For years, the goal was simple: reach page one of Google. Now a growing share of people never click a page-one result at all. They read the AI summary at the top, or ask ChatGPT or Perplexity, and they are done.

If your brand is not inside that answer, you are missing from the moment the decision gets made, even if you rank well below it.

I have spent over 10 years in SEO, mostly on technical audits. Most “next big things” fade. This one is real, but it is also surrounded by hype. So in this post I will keep it honest: what the data says, what works, and what is overrated.

Why traditional SEO alone is not enough anymore

Three recent studies show the shift clearly:

The takeaway is not “SEO is dead.” Rankings still feed the AI tools with sources. The takeaway is that ranking is now only step one. Step two is being chosen as a source.

What is GEO, in simple words?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) means shaping your content and brand so AI tools can find you, understand you, trust you, and mention you.

Traditional SEO asks: “How do I rank higher in the list of links?”
GEO asks: “How do I become the source the AI is comfortable quoting?”

GEO sits on top of SEO. If your site has crawl errors, slow pages or a messy structure, AI tools will struggle with it too. That is why our work always starts with a technical SEO audit.

Standard keyword targeting vs. AI search indexing

AreaTraditional SEOGEO / AI search
Main goalRank in the list of linksBe cited or mentioned in the AI answer
Query styleShort keywords (“best crm software”)Long questions (“Which CRM suits a 10-person agency?”)
What gets judgedKeywords, links, page experienceClear facts, authorship, and brand reputation across the web
Content styleBuilt around one target phraseDirect answers, clear passages, full topic coverage
Success metricRankings and clicksCitations, brand mentions, branded search, plus clicks

What this means for your content

  • Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first two lines under a heading, then explain.
  • Write like people ask. Use real questions as headings. Your sales calls are a goldmine for these.
  • Cover the topic, not just the keyword. One deep page that answers the follow-up questions beats five thin ones.
  • Show who wrote it. Real authors with real experience. This is E-E-A-T, and it matters even more when a machine has to decide whom to trust.
Quick test: Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity 10 questions your customers would ask. Write down which brands appear and which sites get cited. If yours is missing, you have found your GEO gap. You can also run our free AI SEO score checker for a fast first look.

Building your brand as an “entity”

AI systems do not only read pages. They try to understand things: companies, people, products. In SEO these are called entities. The clearer your brand is as an entity, the easier it is for AI to attribute information to you correctly.

1. Schema helps, but do not oversell it

A lot of GEO advice says “add schema and AI will cite you.” The evidence does not support that. Search Engine Land’s review of the research found no proven link between schema coverage and citation rates, and a 2026 academic study on SSRN, “Does Schema Markup Predict AI Citation?”, also reached a null result once its models were corrected.

So why do I still use it? Because schema removes guesswork. It is plumbing, not magic. It helps Google and other systems understand who you are, and it still powers rich results in normal search. I would set up:

  • Organization schema on the homepage, with sameAs links to your official profiles (LinkedIn, X, Facebook).
  • Person schema for authors.
  • Article schema on blog posts.
  • Other types (FAQ, Product, LocalBusiness) only where they truly match the page.

Think of schema as a supporting actor. The lead roles belong to strong content and outside trust.

2. Earn trust from other sites

What seems to matter more is what the rest of the web says about you. AI tools compare mentions of your brand across many sources. A few strong signals:

  • Editorial backlinks from relevant, respected sites. Ten real ones beat a hundred directory links.
  • Brand mentions in trusted places, even without a link.
  • Reviews and third-party profiles. Review and trust sites are a big source of AI citations, which is one reason reputation work and GEO go hand in hand.
  • Real people behind the brand, with visible experience and profiles.

3. Keep your facts consistent

If your site says you were founded in 2015, LinkedIn says 2016 and a directory says 2014, AI gets confused, and a confused system tends to skip you. Audit your name, description, services and location across the web, and fix the differences.

Proving the ROI

“Trust us, GEO works” is not enough. Tie every effort to numbers the business cares about:

  • Organic conversions, not just sessions.
  • Non-branded keyword growth, which shows new audiences finding you.
  • AI citations for a fixed list of questions, checked every month.
  • Branded search growth, a sign that people hear about you in AI tools and then look you up.
  • Leads or revenue from organic, the number that decides budgets.

Also use Google Search Console’s AI-related reporting to see where your pages show up. Most teams still skip citation tracking, so a simple monthly log already puts you ahead.

Example: what a GEO-ready SEO project can look like

Illustrative example. This is a sample scenario with round numbers to show how we measure results, not a specific client.

Business: B2B software company
Starting point: Organic traffic flat for 12 months, 0 mentions in 20 tracked AI questions
What was done (months 1 to 6): Fixed crawl and indexing issues, rewrote 15 key pages into an answer-first format, added Organization, Person and Article schema, earned 12 editorial links, cleaned up brand details across profiles
Sample results after 6 months: organic leads up 40%, non-branded clicks up 55%, brand cited in 6 of 20 tracked AI questions, branded searches up 30%

Results vary by industry, competition and starting point. See real projects on our case study page.

The pattern is usually the same: fix the foundation, make the brand clear, then earn trust. There are no shortcuts, but the results last longer than tricks do.

A simple GEO checklist for this month

  1. Run a technical audit: crawlability, indexation, speed, broken pages.
  2. Rewrite your top 10 pages with a direct answer at the top and question-style headings.
  3. Add real author bios with experience to every article.
  4. Set up Organization, Person and Article schema, then validate it.
  5. Clean up your brand details across the web.
  6. Build 5 to 10 relevant editorial links or mentions.
  7. Track 20 key questions in AI tools each month and log the results.

Final thoughts

Traditional SEO is not dead. It is just not enough on its own. The brands that win from here will be technically clean, clearly defined and genuinely trusted, so that both Google and AI tools feel safe recommending them.

Start with the foundation, then build the trust signals on top. That is how you get visibility that survives the next algorithm update instead of chasing it.
